The American Astronautical Society (AAS) congratulates Col. Pamela Melroy on her confirmation as NASA Deputy Administrator.
“Deputy Administrator Melroy’s confirmation assures that her remarkable background and her insights into NASA will be a great benefit to NASA Administrator Nelson as he works to assure the agency successfully returns America and its international partners back to the moon,” said AAS President Alan de Luna. “NASA will benefit greatly from this new team moving forward”.
Melroy’s range of technical and managerial experience from USAF test pilot, NASA astronaut on three shuttle missions – including one mission as space shuttle commander – and her space industry background at Lockheed Martin as the deputy Orion program manager gives her the perfect background in human space exploration and aviation. Her subsequent leadership positions at the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Office of Commercial Space Transportation and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) also give her unique insight into overseeing complex space programs and processes.
