Awards Overview

Each year the AAS provides the opportunity to select individuals
from the astronautical community to be honored for particularly outstanding
achievements which have contributed to the advancement of the United States
Space Program.  The Society feels the importance of recognizing the
excellence and professional service of members of the space community and
our own members cannot be overstated, and improved the Awards and Fellows
nomination process several years ago with the following changes:

  • Expand and encourage nominations from all AAS members
  • Give priority to nominees who are AAS members or whose employers are AAS
    corporate members
  • Publish an Awards and Fellows announcement in Space Times several months
in advance of the official letter requesting nominations
  • Highlight the call for Award and Fellow nominees at conferences and symposia
in the months preceding the issuance of the call for nominations
  • Create separate advocacy and review groups within the Awards Committee
  • Empower the Awards committee to screen nominations and recommend candidates
to the AAS Board of Directors
  • Establish additional criteria to enhance integrity of process, e.g. disallow
nominations from a member who is a direct subordinate of the nominee
  • Only current AAS members will be considered for AAS Fellows
  • Widely publish the names of AAS award recipients and Fellows, including,
but not limited to the AAS Space Times, and industry trade publications

Make it your mission to assure that a deserving person gets considered.
